Communication for Board Meeting March 8th, 2011
I mentioned at the last board meeting that I would be posting my communication information on my web site, for those who have
a pencil and paper handy the website URL is www.queskorner.net and that is corner with a K, it will repeat this again after my
comments.
February 24th, 2011 – Attended the first of the 2 day CASB Winter Legislative Conference. I enjoyed the comments by Jamie
Vollmer, the keynote speaker, I will note read the 4 pages of notes I took on his subject, I actually want to read his book but
this will have to take its place behind the 5 or 6 other books I have picked up lately to read. My focus at this conference was on
the subject of Local Control and how it relates to community involvement.
February 26th, 2011 – I spent a long day at ACHS as a volunteer for Ascent Performance (Blue Knights Drum and Bugal
Corp). I believe during the 16 hours of activity at least 1500 individuals came to see the competition of some 60 plus schools
and other groups perform.
February 27th-28, 2011 – I had to forgo attend the Latina(o) Advocacy Days convention my activity of the previous day left me
with some very sore feet, knees and back, I like to think I have the mind of a X’er but the body of a Boomer.
March 1st, 2011 – Attended the BOE study session.
March 3rd, 2011 – Attended the Adco CSAC meeting, we were sadden to learn that 58 percent of the fund allocated to assist
non profits have been cut out of our budget.
March 4th, 2011 – Attended the CCYC (unofficial name) at the DRC, our kids are excited about this project and we almost had
100 parent participation at this meeting.
March 7, 201l – Attended the Commerce City Council meeting and saw the passage of Ordinance 1851 which amended the
municipal code and now prohibits smoking in city parks, trails and open spaces and recreation facilities. This was a project of a
group of A14 students from ACMS.
Once again for those who did not have a pencil and paper handy earlier my web site url is www.queskorner.net and you can click

February 9th, 2011 – I began this day with a visit to the District Service Center and had the opportunity to
express my thanks to the Bus Drivers for all the efforts they make to safely transport the A14 students to school
in the morning and back to their homes after school. The impact of their efforts was even more meaningful to
me because as some may recall this was during the period that we were experiencing subs zero temperatures.
This was actually my first visit to the Service Center and it was an amazing experience on my part to see all that
our district employees do for the A14 community. Once again I want to say thanks to Alex Boucher and all
who work with him at the Service Center.
That evening I attended the BOCES directors meeting and we will likely be voting at our next meeting to
approve the new revised policies for BOCES as well as the Strategic Plan which is a first for the Adams County
BOCES.
February 10th, 2011 – Attended the Board of Education Training on mainly dealing with legal issues and a
smaller presentation on insurance coverage’s. Other than the A14 BOE there was little representation from
members of any district Boards. I did have the opportunity have a conversation with individuals I know from
other districts most of whom were actually members of the DAAC organization or community members
involved in their school districts.
February 18th, 2011 – I attended the Colorado Department of Education’s Summit on Dropout Prevention and
Student Engagement. Mr. Albright, Ms. Logee and Ms. Youkum were also there from the district. I
participated in two breakout sessions the first was Engaging the Reluctant Learner which was presented by the
Principal of East High School and one of his teachers. I had the opportunity of having a brief conversation
with John Youngquist the Principal and shared with him my experience I had about a year ago with a group of
East High students at the LADs conference. I continue to be amazed at the degree of school spirit you see at
East and after seeing the presentation and speaking to the Principal I can understand why this is so.
The other breakout session I participated in was Family Engagement for Student Success and this consisted of
new innovation to bring in Family engagement into districts; one of the presents shared his experiences from
what sounded like ours in Arizona.
The keynote speaker at the summit was Bill Milliken author of The Last Dropout: Stop the Epidemic. I picked
up from some of comments he was of the same school of thought that I happen to hold and this prompted me to
have a one on one conversation with him and yes we both base our line of thinking on our experiences working
in the faith base community. His presentation was in fact the same presentation I share with community
groups and churches.
I want to mentioned that perhaps between 25 to 30 percent of the attendees were Hispanic and I crossed paths
with individuals I knew, some in fact came from A14 and others that shared the challenges they have as Latinos
in working and participating in the field of Education. I was invited to participate in a new organization to seek
out and encourage more Hispanics to becoming school Administrators and Superintendents.
February 19th, 2011 – Attended the Friends and Family concert featuring ACHS 1988 graduate Richie Castro
to launch a fundraiser to produce the History Hunter CD and novel.
February 20th, 2011 – Attended fundraiser at El Jardin for Hanson K-8

March 10, 2011 – Attended the meeting with members of Commerce City Seniors at the Senior Center.
Later that day we had a special BOE meeting to address CLA’s request to become part of the CSI.
March 21, 2011 – Attended the city council meeting.
